Livestock Equipment Feeding Guide
How do I size a water tank?
Size it for your hottest, driest week. Cattle drink about a gallon per 100 pounds of body weight in winter and roughly two gallons in summer, so a dozen 1,200-lb cows can need the better part of 300 gallons a day in August heat. Too small means hauling water at the worst possible time; too big means stale water. Tell us your head count and we'll do the math with you.
What panels and gates do I actually need?
Enough to sort, load, and doctor animals safely, plus a few spares for the day something bends. Powder-coated or galvanized panels stand up to our sun and weather; match panel height and bar spacing to your animals (what holds a cow won't hold a goat). Good gates in the right places save more labor than almost any other purchase.
What about feeders and handling gear?
Same rule as everything else: buy for the animals you have and the chores you do daily. Feeders that waste less feed pay for themselves in saved feed; solid, low-stress handling equipment pays for itself in safety, yours and the animals'.
Equipment planning list:
- Water tanks sized to summer demand
- Panels and gates matched to species, with spares
- Feeders that waste less and keep feed clean
- Handling basics for safe, low-stress work
- Winter-ready options: heated or insulated waterers
